Our People
Roy Gaynor
Roy’s early career was in middle and senior management roles in quality assurance, industrial engineering and human resource development with Unilever and BTR. He moved in management consultancy in 1987. Roy’s consultancy clients have included Microsoft, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, Apple Computer, Allied Dunbar, Eagle Star, Swiss Re, Whitbread, Shell, DSGI and BT. Roy’s clients say that he has an easy and straightforward personality and is able to relate to and discourse with most people. They say he has a very strong aptitude for listening and digesting information, combined with the ability to understand, analyse and consolidate what he has heard in giving a practical assessment. Clients are impressed by Roy’s ability to shape his approach and behaviour to suit the culture of their organisation. Most of all, clients say that Roy helps them to achieve the results they want. Roy is married and has fathered four children although sadly his eldest died of a brain tumour in 2005. As a result of his son’s death, Roy decided to reopen the other passion in his life, music, and has sung at a number of charity concerts to raise money for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust – see Charity Work. Roy’s other children include Mark who is director of a leading oil and power-broking company in Houston, USA, Hannah who is about to graduate as a medical doctor from Cardiff University and young Nick, who looks as though he might follow Roy’s interest in music production. “For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by what causes some people to search for truth and understanding and causes other people to, without challenge, accept things the way they are. I believe that everyone has a deep well of untapped possibilities and I’m intrigued by the way that some people know and utilise this and other people are oblivious to it. The work I do creates the opportunity for each person to notice and utilise their well of possibilities, thereby enriching their lives, enhancing the performance of their organisation and meeting the needs and aspirations of the customers they serve.”
Jeremy GommJeremy’s clients say he is a great listener. And a good talker. It’s a winning combination with his clients, who universally praise his capacity to generate in them confidence, optimism and energy and a ‘can do’ approach to achieving success. The listening and talking skills grew out of a career in newspapers, where he won awards for newspaper design and editorship and, more importantly for him, his people won awards for excellence in practising the skills of journalism. As Editor in Chief of a group of UK regional newspapers, Jeremy’s creative expertise and inspirational leadership led to exceptional performance from individuals and teams and the rejuvenation of advertising revenue and readership. For Jeremy, communication is key to success. As a coach and facilitator, he uses and encourages in others the use of a wide variety of communication techniques to command attention, motivate involvement, generate learning and change behaviour. “The biggest buzz I get out of the work I do is hearing the delight in my clients’ voices when they tell me how they have achieved what they originally thought was beyond them.” Jeremy was described by the Head of Marketing at BBC World Service as “an oasis of calm” when facilitating a multi-cultural body of journalists through a Navisys change programme. “Journalists are not very good structural thinkers and they will come in from stage left or stage right and sometimes you wonder just where the hell they are coming from. Jeremy was able to, all the time without exception, say to people ‘that’s really interesting because what you’re really saying is this’ and that worked well.” At Finnforest UK, Jeremy “brought people together from different parts of the business in a constructive and highly customer focused manner. Following some initial resistance, they opened up and enjoyed the experience.” A senior British Waterways manager commented: "Jeremy’s coaching helped to reveal hidden personal assets in my senior management team and steer us towards better functionality. We are now working on a different level and our batteries are fully charged!" Other coaching clients comment: "Jeremy’s coaching unlocked my potential as a leader” and "Jeremy has helped me rediscover my self-belief.” In his role as Navisys change facilitator, Jeremy has led major programmes in a wide variety of organisations aimed at improving the performance of people, processes and products, finding differentiators in crowded market places and delighters for customers. His consultancy clients include 3M, BT, AXA Insurance, BBC World Service, British Waterways, Finnforest UK, Parexel, Coors, Royal & SunAlliance and Trinity Mirror Group. None of this would encourage Jeremy to move to the South of England, despite having to negotiate the M6 frequently to accommodate clients. He is committed to life in the North, where he finds his own inspiration walking around the Lake District. Pity about the rain. Sarah Latham
